Obviously it's fun if people are talking about teleportation or other impressive-sounding stuff, but the key to a neat sample is a sense of conviction or importance in what is said - that's what makes it sound cool even if you have no idea where it came from.

A year ago myself and the wife got into a Star Trek kick and watched the entire original series and the entire Next Generation series. Back when film scoring involved hiring an orchestra because there was no other option, they only used music on the big scenes.ģ. I found an old Gozilla film on Netflix one day that turned out to be an absolute goldmine and I must have cut 30+ samples from it - not all of which are usable, but then you wouldn't want your tracks to be so cookie-cutter that you could just interchange samples freely, would you? The key to good samples is age + a lower production budget. This is time-consuming and usually less satisfying than you hoped at the outset.Ģ. Pick famous classic movies, but just be more diligent and mine for quotes that haven't been used yet but are still recognizable. Sometimes studios do a re-release like this for contractual reasons, to prevent the rights to a property from expiring and reverting to the original production company, so not every re-release of a classic is necessarily an improvement. Maybe I find the wrong quotes :PYep.the more recent the movie, the 'busier' the soundtrack with lots of room tone, atmospheric effects, and worst of all 'wallpaper music' - thrown in to give a sense of urgency or excitement to a scene that otherwise feels a bit too static. I try to extract quotes from Youtube, but there is too much background noise from the movies. Like famous sci fi quotes without background noise. I am not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but is there a good source for good samples of people talking.
Throw them through some effects and voila! If you're really stuck, get up and wal around with a handheld recorder and sample household noises or use sounds from a film sample library (sometimes referred to as foley sounds).
A lot of my favorite psychedelic sounds were discovered rather than being deliberately constructed - sounds like that need anemotional impact so I think it's best to trust your ears and just grab whatever sounds tickle them, as opposed to sitting down and saying 'I will create psychedelia now,' which is just as likely to be frustrating if you're not in the mood. Some of it will be junk but other bits will sound tasty, and you can no loop/repeeat/retrigger, add delay/reverb/whatever and so on.įeedback based effexts chains are great for this too, not least because they tend to throw up unexpected results. Then take the recording and cut it up, either apply fades or just throw the pieces into a sampler and give the amp envelope a longish attack and release. One trick if you're feeling a bit short on time or inspiration is to set something recording and then just pick some synth patches you like and tweak the sound randomly for 5 or 10 minutes - I don't mean completely randomly of course, do it to please your ear, but without any particular objective in mind. It's easy to get seduced by adding more and more sounds with increasingly less musical coherence.Įg This old school track isn't all that complex timbrally - some LFO filter burbles here and there, heavily reverbed sample snippets, some portamento tricks - but it's an ass-kicking arrangement: I'm not sure you need that many, having variation in your rhythm and riffs is as/more important than endless new sounds.
